Limited edition of three hundred and eighty copies, of which this is number one hundred and thirty-seven. Signed by the author/illustrator to the limitation page. Illustrated with sixteen tipped-in colour plates, and forty-four black and white images. Collated complete. A collection of charming images of old inns from across Great Britain, such as: The George Inn in Salisbury, The King's Head in Chigwell, The Angel Inn in Woolhampton, The Star Inn in Alfriston, and The Mermain Inn in Rye. Written and illustrated by Cecil Aldin, a British artist and illustrator known for his paintings and sketches of animals and sports. In the original quarter vellum with cream paper covered boards. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear and minor bumping to the extremities. The odd mark. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot. Description: First edition 1921. Presentation as follows "To my friend S. B. Russell" and signed by Cecil Aldin. Also full page coloured sketch of a man looking at his empty mug. It is entitled The Empty Mug and in brackets underneath (not apropos of The Lygon's hospitable doors). The presentation is particularly interesting as S. B. Russell was the owner of the Lygon Arms in Broadway at the time. This is mentioned on page 110 of the book. The illustration is typical of the work by Aldin and is very fine. The book is lightly foxed and marked throughout. The publishers black cloth is rubbed and frayed around the edges, spine split down edges and marking to the rear cover. A very interesting and unique copy. 149 p.

Limited edition copy #357 of 380 copies signed by the author and illustrator, and with an original drawing in black pencil and colored pencil added to the limitation page. The limitation page also bears the name of Sidney Pawling (Heinemann publisher) Xmas, 1921. From the library of Nelson Doubleday with his bookplate fixed to front pastedown. Doubleday purchased a controlling stake in the London publishing house, Heinemann, in 1921.
