Description: Twelvemo, viii, 56pp. Blue cloth, title printed on spine. First edition with "Scribner's A" on copyright page. Solid text block, touch of wear to cloth. In the publisher's dust jacket, $1.50 on front flap, tape repairs to top and bottom edges of verso, light wear to corners and spine, a touch of shelf wear. Blue and silver text vibrant and clear. Inscribed on the half-title: "To Ruth Thomas / with best wishes from / Charles A. Lindbergh / August 1948." Ruth Thomas watched the Lindbergh children throughout the 1940s and completed some secretarial work for the family as well. Thomas was close with Charles' wife, Anne Lindbergh, but the two had a complex relationship, as recorded in Anne's letters.

The recipient, Walter Bartky was an American educator and mathematician and friend of the Lindberghs. After receiving a Ph.D. from the university, he served on its faculty in the astronomy department. In 1943 he became associate dean of the University of Chicago’s Division of Physical Sciences. During the Manhattan Project, Bartky served as the Metallurgical Laboratory’s associate director. Bartky was a signatory of the Szilard Petition. In 1945, he accompanied Leo Szilard and Harold Urey to present a memorandum to future Secretary of State James F. Byrnes that warned of the dangers of a nuclear arms race. Brown, Director of Detroit Historical Museum , dated April 8, 1959.The letter is a request for Lindbergh to sign the book for a Mrs. Wilson W. Mills a past president of the Historical Society and a daughter of Hazen S. Pingree, mayor of Detroit and former Governor of Michigan.
