Illustrations and jacket design by Elaine Raphael and Don Bolognese. 8-5/8" tall, 433 numbered pages (which are followed by the last, unnumbered, page of text); one piece brown cloth binding, gilt lettering on spine only; entire front board decorated with a blindstamped scene featuring two large trees; end pages have white-on-light brown line drawing of a barn, barnyard, and several out buildings; fore edge not trimmed, and even the bottom edge is rough & uneven from about page 140 to the end. Book is square, hinges are tight, head & heel of spine lightly bumped, corners not bumped, interior very clean; book has virtually no shelf wear. Jacket is very good with several small dings with very tiny closed tears on bottom edge causing slight loss of color but no loss of paper; 2-1/2" thin scrape on back panel; original price "$10.00" on front flap. Condition of book and jacket consistent with either not being read or being very gently read. No other discernible or objectionable faults on book or jacket such as marks or writing within, stains, tears, chips, or other damage that would diminish its appearance. No remainder mark, no previous owner markings or inscriptions, not price clipped, not a book club edition, not a former library book. Signed by author John Gardner, with characteristic loops on his capital letters, done in black ink on the first preliminary page.
