The dust jacket is also in nearly fine condition, not price-clipped ($8.95 ), with no creases, chips or tears and minimal shelf wear at the spine. Description: Signed First US Edition, Presentation copy. Very good plus condition in very good unclipped dust jacket. Inscribed by Roth to Julius and dated April 1974 (To Julius, another one for the mob). Julius is believed to be the painter Julius Goldstein who was married to the writer Joan Aitken, both close friends of Philip Roth. The dust jacket shows signs of wear and has a few nicks, particularly to the head and tail of the spine (see photo).

Spine a bit rolled, board edges slightly splayed, else contents clean; Very Good+. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $8.95), lightly edgeworn, with a diagonal crease to upper front flap fold, and a few thin scratches along the rear joint; Very Good+. Roth's eighth novel, and the first to feature his recurring character Nathan Zuckerman, who over the following decade would figure prominently in The Ghost Writer (1979), Zuckerman Unbound (1981), The Anatomy Lesson (1983), and The Prague Orgy (1985). A significant association copy inscribed to Alison Lurie (1926-2020), winner of the 1984 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and one of the dedicatees of Roth's third novel, When She Was Good. When Lurie was interviewed by Liz Lear in 1988 and asked if any other writers had been supportive of her work, or if there was one in particular to whom she owed a debt of gratitude, she mentioned Edward Hower, Diane Johnson, and Roth. "Philip Roth has also been most helpful. He read a number of my earlier books and his constructive criticism was invaluable" (Key West Review, Vol.1, No.1, Spring 1988). Roth was known for not inscribing books casually, and those with inscriptions of a close, meaningful nature, have never been plentiful.
