A tight and nice first edition of the first volume of this trilogy -- with choice autograph addition: Extra-illustrated with unique frontispiece, a Typed Note Signed from co-author Hall tipped before the title page. 1p, 8" X 10", Boston, MA, 5 May 1940. Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Very good. Mildly age toned, with original light folds. Hall thanks this admirer "for your birthday greetings. It isn't a state holiday in Ohio is it? I wouldn't even have remembered the day myself except that the 22nd of April happens to be my wife's natal day as well, so of course she doesn't permit me to pass it over." Signed large and bold in full. First impressions of the first edition bore blank endpapers, while most copies such as this example bear partly-color pictorial endpapers.
