Description: 183pp. Beige Cloth, Black lettering on the spine. Penn's inscription on the front free endpaper. Black and white, color photographs on each page. Covers are toned and foxed, with the tip of the the upper right corner of the front panel blackened. The spine is darkened and rubbed. Internally fine, unmarked. Unclipped white jacket is bright, the upper edge of the front flap frayed, minor roughness to the upper edge of the front panel. Housed in a sturdy pictorial slipcase with edgewear and superficial wear. Irving Penn's first book is a selection of the work he had been doing for nearly twenty years under Alexander Liberman's direction at Vogue. Liberman wrote the introduction and Penn designed the eight "essays in photographs and words." The photographs include some of the great Penn portraits in gray corners. Size: 9 5/8" x 13"

Description: First edition, first printing, presentation copy inscribed on the front free endpaper "For Francine and Cleve, With Love, Irving Penn". The recipients were the French-American Pulitzer Prize-nominated writer and literary critic, Francine du Plessix (1930-2019), and her husband, the American abstract expressionist painter, Cleve Gray (1918-2004). Francine Du Plessix was the step-daughter of Alexander Liberman, who was the art editor of Vogue from 1941 to 1962, before becoming the editorial director of Condé Nast, and who contributed to this work. This collection of photographs was taken by Penn between 1947 and 1958, including portraits, landscapes, and still lifes, all of which first appeared within the editorial pages of Vogue. Roth p. 158 Tall quarto. Original cream linen, titles to spine in black. With dust jacket and the pictorial slipcase (slight wear to extremities). Housed in custom green morocco-backed green cloth slipcase and matching chemise, titles in gilt direct to spine. Numerous monochrome and colour photographic illustrations. Slight foxing to boards, the binding otherwise firm and square, light foxing to first and last few pages, else internally fresh. A very good copy in the very good jacket, light soiling, slight wear to head of spine panel.

Bonner is noted in the acknowledgments section of the book for helping Penn with pre-publication issues. A nice copy.

Fine in a fine near dust jacket. Slipcase is about fine condition. Includes the original brown paper covering from Simon and Schuster, which is worn. Roth 101, pp. 158-159; Hasselblad pp. 186-7. Irving Penn was an internationally known American photographer who became popular for his work in fashion photography. He worked at Vogue magazine, and he photographed for Issey Miayke and Clinique. His work serves as an example of excellent photography even today. Moments Preserved is his first publication. Irving Penn said befittingly of his work, "[s]ensitive people faced with the prospect of a camera portrait put on a face they think is one they would like to show the world. Very often what lies behind the facade is rare and more wonderful than the subject knows or dares to believe" His photography is held at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, both of which also hold collections of personal materials that relate to Penn's career.
