This is a very fine limited edition ( 741/1030) inscribed by the author to K. " Faith unfortunately cures itself) John Galsworthy. This is the second Trilogy of The Forsyte chronicles, and the first book ( The White Monkey) of the Modern Comedy series. Three books were published in this trilogy.Book includes a flawless fold out section of the Forsyte family tree. Unopened book is beautifully bound in full velum with guilt lettering on a faded spine, with gilt embellishments. Book has nice silk page holder. Original tissue wrap in very fine and protected in Mylar Highly collectible. Galsworthy won the Nobel Prize in 1932. Size: 7.5x5.25

Description: 8vo; full vellum, in slipcase. Limited editon copy #1012 of 1030 copies signed by the author. Galsworthy has additionally added an autograph quotation (as he has in some other copies); our quotation relates to "The English". Although nothing here explicitly indicates as much, this book from the estate of Galsworthy's friend, the publisher, Nelson Doubleday, to who he had dedicated his book "Swan Song" a year earlier. Doubleday purchased a controlling stake in the English publishing house, Heinemann, in 1921.

This copy inscribed by Galsworthy at ffep, “To [-] from John”. There was a signed limited edition printed simultaneously as the first, so signed and inscribed copies are much scarcer. This is likely an association copy, given the author has used his first name. From the library of George C Hopkinson, a Yorkshire textile businessman and very keen supporter of Yorkshire artists and writers, and an editor of the Heaton Review. Condition: Near fine in very good dust jacket, price to spine panel, some loss at spine head, smaller chips at forecorners and other edges, the spine and other panels quite harshly toned. Green cloth clean with a few minor bumps, green topstain bright. Binding tight and square. Internally clean, a little offset toning at ffep, small bookseller sticker. First twenty or so pages with a faint crease at corner, else fine.

Description: A signed limited edition of Galsworthy's 'Modern Comedy'. With an illustrated plate of the Forsyte Family Tree. This is the 69th copy of 1030 printed which are signed and inscribed by the author. The inscription to this copy is a quote from Galsworthy's play 'The Mob', 'To fight to a finish knowing you must be beaten, is anything better worth it?'. The character More says this line in act IV of the play. With a letter from actor Ronald Simpson tipped in to front pastedown dated 19 May 1947 saying 'With best wishes and many thanks for your kind appreciation of my performance in 'In Chancery' Ronald Simpson'. Simpson acted as the lead Soames in a BBC adaptation of Galsworthy's second book of the Forsyte series, 'In Chancery'. John Galsworthy was an English novelist and playwright. Notable works include 'The Forsyte Saga' and its sequels 'A Modern Comedy' and 'End of the Chapter'. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1932. 'The Forsyte Saga' chronicles the vicissitudes of the leading members of a large commercial upper middle class English family, similar to Galsworthy's own. Slipcase is in a good condition. In a vellum binding, with gilt stamping to spine and board edges. Externally, very smart. Some marks to the boards and spine. Boards are cockled slightly. Slipcase is rubbed, particularly to the top and bottom. There is a hole to the top of the slipcase at the spine and the top edge is lifting. A letter from the actor Robert Simpson tipped to front pastedown. Signature of Eliza Board to recto of front endpaper dated Easter 1943. Internally, the book is firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Ribbon bookmark present. Very Good Indeed
