Description: W. Collins Sons & Co. Ltd., 48 Pall Mall, London, UK, 1921. Hardcover. First edition, 365 pp. This is #112 of only 210 copies SIGNED by de la Mare on limitation page. Olive-gray boards and linen spine with leather label. de la Mare is widely known for his ghost stories and was much admired by H. P. Lovecraft. The midget in this fascinating metaphysical novel, though small of stature, is preternaturally intelligent. This odd, surrealistic novel was published to high praise in 1921 and in that year received the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction. This copy has some blunted corners, some stains on the boards and one 1/2" gouge on front board. Deckled (uneven) pages as published and some miscellaneous wear and tear befitting its age. I got this in 1994 and have left the original seller's writing (including the $50.00 price, all in pencil) on the front free endpaper.

Four pages of publishers' adverts at rear.Tipped onto the front free endpaper is a small franked envelope typed with the address of a Mr B.F. Hart in Los Angeles. Inside the envelope is a short Typed Note to Mr Hart signed by the author on his headed Taplow notepaper and dated June 6, 1933: ''It has been a pleasure to write my name on the three cards you sent to me.''. One of these cards is present.Free endpapers partially tanned. Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed. Very good indeed in very good, slightly chipped dustwrapper with a couple of short closed tears.

Otherwise clean, tight and unmarked. Very neat - a sound and handsome copy of an early printing. Four pages of publisher's ads. at rear.
