William S. Rubin. Modern Sacred Art And The Church Of Assy (Only Signed Copy). Columbia University Press, New York and London, 1961.

Price: US$70.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: First Edition ( 'First Published in Book Form 1961'). Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy of this book for sale anywhere on the Internet. In fact, I was unable to find one other signed copy of any of William S. Rubin's books for sale on the Internet. The inscription is on the first front end paper. It reads 'To the Lesters with affection, Bill'. There's also a Columbia University Press 'With the compliments of the Author' slip. It is in perfect condition. 'William Stanley Rubin was an American art scholar. a distinguished curator, critic, collector, art historian and teacher of modern art. From 1968 to 1988, Rubin was a curator at The Museum of Modern Art located in New York City and, from 1973 to 1988, he served as director of the Painting and Sculpture Department.' As you can see from the photos, the covers are in exceptional condition, perfectly clean and showing almost no wear at all, just a very light bump at the front and rear bottom edge. The corners look perfect. So does the spine. The black lettering on the front and spine is very bright and unworn. The page edges are perfectly clean. The top page edge is a pinkish red. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover, nicely tight pages, no binding issues at all. The white inside covers and end papers are very clean. There are actually three blank front end papers ( a little unusual), followed by the half-title page, and then a color frontispiece from a painting by Pierre Bonnard. The pages in the book are in terrific condition and exceptionally clean. I'm not seeing any soiling at all, and I'm not seeing any wear at all, no creasing, no dogeared corners, no markings, no attachments, and with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. There are quite a lot of black and white illustrations, as well as several in color. Wonderful looking book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It's held up reasonably well. It has two tears off the front top edge and two off the rear top edge. It has small loss at the top edge of the spine, not reaching the lettering, and a tiny chip off the top edge of the rear cover. The rear cover also has a thin dark line across part of its bottom half. The flaps are in very good condition. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I've had it in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book. The white on the top edge of the front cover that you see in the first photo is just glare off the edge of the plastic of the protective cover. From the Acknowledgments page: 'For aid in preparing this book I am indebted to the participating artists who gave their time to discussions of their own works. Jean Lurcat, Germaine Richier, Jacques Lipchitz, and Marc Chagall were particularly generous in this regard.'
