First edition, first printing (Johnston A2.1.a.). A presentation copy, inscribed: "Thomas Wolfe, Jan. 28, 1930, for Dorothea Kaumn Mayer," on the front free endpaper. A striking copy of Wolfe's first novel.

Tipped on to the front fly leaf are 2 extra leaves one with a long inscription from Wolfe "with my warmest and most grateful thanks for all she did to help make my first visit to California such a pleasant and happy one Thomas Wolfe Palo Alto Sept 9, 1935" Thomas Wolfe made two trips to the western states,one in 1935 and another in 1938. He wanted "to get the whole wilderness of the American continent into my work" (The Notebooks of Thomas Wolfe 963) I am sure the page is from another book and tipped into this one. Enclosed in a custom lavender box.

A near fine copy with bright gilt lettering, in an attractive example of the uncommon jacket. There is some chipping to the top edge of the rear panel and spine, affecting "O" and "K" in the first word of the title on backstrip. The author's first novel, inscribed and signed by Thomas Wolfe, March 27, 1930. The recipient's attractive bookplate appears opposite, on the front pastedown.
