Description: Very good first edition book in very good dust jacket. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page. Blue cloth covered boards have several smudges and light scrapes on the front and back panels. Upper front right corner is lightly bumped and rubbed on the upper edge. Fore-edge corners are also minimally rubbed. Head and tail of dust jacket spine are rubbed and creased. Head has several chips with two 1/5" closed vertical tears on the back corner, a 3/8" closed vertical tear in the center and a 1/4" vertical tear with adjacent creases in the front corner. Upper left corner on front panel has a 3/10" closed tear with a 1" crease running to the upper edge. Center of upper edge has a 1/4" closed tear. Tail of jacket spine is rubbed and creased with a 5/8" closed tear along the front corner fold. All fore-edge corners are rubbed and creased with loss of up to 1/8" by 1/5". Upper and lower edges are minimally creased in several places. Fore-edge folds are heavily creased. Not price clipped. He was remembered as a bipartisan lawmaker, who delivered major federal work projects to his district, including Warm Springs Dam. He died in 2015.

He was an ardent supporter of Richard Nixon in 1968 and 1972, even accompanying him to the funeral of Martin Luther King, Jr. He never identified as a Republican, but his support for Nixon angered many of his black friends.
