Description: First edition, first printing, inscribed by the artist across the title page: "Pour Christine Vaclasmy Dali 1963" in black and blue ink, with a loose sketch of a figure, possibly a girl skipping, a common motif in Dalí's work. The Angelus, by Jean-Francois Millet, is an oil painting completed between 1857 and 1859. It depicts two figures in a field, heads bowed over a basket of potatoes in their recitation of the Catholic devotional prayer. It had a significant impact on Dali, who saw a print of the painting early in life and insisted that it did not depict a prayer, but a funeral scene. The Louvre, at his request, had the painting examined by x-ray, and showed that there was originally a small coffin-shaped object painted in place of the basket. This discovery is included in the prologue, and much of the text depends upon Dalí's interpretation of The Angelus as a tragic image of American folklore. Dalí created several paintings inspired by the titular work: The Architectural Angelus of Millet and Gala (1933), and Gala and the Angelus of Millet Preceding the Imminent Arrival of the Conical Anamorphoses (1933). These were followed two years later by a similar pair of paintings which included a partial reproduction of Millet's Angelus, called The Angelus of Gala and Archaeological Reminiscence of Millet's Angelus. Housed in a custom box, illustrated with photographs of this copy. Illustrated throughout by Salvador Dali, 33 plates tipped in. Lightly foxed, with a few marks and one small scratch to covers, a little shelfwear, a few slight bumps to head of front board, a touch of foxing to end matter and occasionally toned, box a little rubbed and tips lightly bumped, else bright and clean. A very good copy indeed, square and firm.

L' ensemble est accompagné de 37 illustrations en hors-texte dont 33 contrecollées et 3 en couleurs + 14 vignettes de L' Angélus. Notre exemplaire est enrichi d'un DESSIN ORIGINAL au crayon et à pleines-pages, daté et SIGNé par Salvador DALI, et destiné au critique d'art Roger Bouillot. 105 pages. Etiquette et vignette sur le premier plat ; fermeture par lanière et boucle en acier. Format : 22 x 27,5 cms. On joint le carton illustré à rabat pour le vernissage de l'exposition "Salvador Dali" au Centre Pompidou en décembre 1979. Bonne provenance et un ensemble exceptionnel.

Description: Edition originale de cet "Interprétation paranoÏaque critique" du célèbre tableau de Millet, objet de tous les phantasmes de Dali. - Beau cartonnage illustré de l'éditeur, toile, ruban et boucle d'attache à la manière d'un dossier d'archives. Nombreuses illustrations in et hors texte. Exemplaire portant sur le faux-titre et le feuillet blanc en regard un ENVOI autographe signé au stylo bille bleu avec un DESSIN original lui aussi signé de Salvador DALI à Serge Jhuet (sic). La composition figure les deux personnages du tableau de Millet, au soleil couchant. >>> Dali remercie dans sa dédicace Serge Jouet, professeur de philosophie et réalisateur d'émissions radiophoniques au Service de la Recherche créé pour l'ORTF par Pierre Schaeffer. Le peintre avait participé le 2 janvier 1963 à l'émission « Analyse spectrale de l'Occident - Le peintre de la vie moderne », avec Marie-Thérèse Forges, Julien Cain, Michel Drucker et Edouard Pignon.
