Price: US$58.15 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First impression of the true first edition. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author, with an interesting contemporaneous ownership signature and date of renowned race-horse owner Lettice Miller. ***Signed and inscribed on the title-page in blue fountain pen ink to an old-fashioned brown lined accounts paper (or a racing slip?) pasted neatly to the front free endpaper: 'With warm good wishes P. D. James'. The book's owner was the renowned racehorse owner Lettice Miller and has her ownership name and date: 'Lettice Miller 1980' to the top of the front free endpaper in blue biro pen. Lettice Miller (officially Mrs G. B. Miller), the first woman owner ever to win the Derby at Epsom in Coronation year 1937. ***Very good in red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. Boards clean and unmarked. Extremities slightly rubbed. Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed and creased. Small faint water mark to bottom of front board. No reading lean. Spine tight. Internally also very good, with no creases or tears. Paper stock slightly tanned (cheap paper stock used). Pages clean. ***In a very good colour-illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £5.95 net. Extremities of dustwrapper very slightly rubbed. Very small water mark to inside bottom edge of the front panel - not visible on the outside. Red titles to spine faded. Outer edge of the red titles to front panel adjoining spine also very slightly faded. No creases, chips or tears. Dustwrapper clean and bright. ***204mm x136mm. 276 pages. ***'After seven highly acclaimed detective novels featuring her Scotland Yard detective Commander Adam Dalgleish, P. D. James temporarily parts company with him and with the orthodox detective story to write a crime novel with a difference, without any doubt her finest yet. When Philippa Palfrey, adopted as a child and believing herself to be the motherless, illegitimate daughter of an aristocratic father, becomes eighteen she exercises her right under the children act 1975 to apply for a copy of her birth certificate, and learns the facts about her parentage; that she is the child of a rapist and a murderess and that her mother is shortly to be released on licence from a life sentence. With this knowledge she moves into an alien world which is to prove more dangerous and terrifying than any she could imagine. For there is someone else interested in her mother's release - the father of the child she killed, who has dedicated his life to seeking out and destroying his daughter's murderess. ***In "Innocent Blood" P. D. James explores the themes of the growth of love and the search for identity in a novel of extraordinary power and originality which is both a mystery and a thriller. The sustained suspense moves to a climax which is as exciting and satisfying as anything she has yet written.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***First impression of the true first edition, in its original dustwrapper, signed and inscribed by the author on a paper slip attached to the title-page, with a very interesting ownership name. Lettice Miller was the first ever woman owner to win the Derby at Epsom in the Coronation Year of 1937 with her colt Mid-day Sun, who won it by one and a half lengths. It was rumoured that the Queen wagered a bet of £1. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

JAMES, P.D.. Innocent Blood/The Blood Tie (Uncorrected Proof). Faber & Faber, London, 1980.

Price: US$1657.22 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: A rare and very unusual author-signed, uncorrected proof copy. Prior to its publication, "Innocent Blood" was to be called "The Blood Tie". This copy, acquired in the 1980s from a publisher's sales rep shows the original title and it comes with a proof jacket bearing the later title. I showed it to P.D. James when I visited her at her house in Holland Park, London in the 1990s for a private book-signing session and she vividly remembered the last minute change of title, although she said that she had only ever seen one copy other than the one she signed for me. Generally in very good+ condition with tanning to the green covers and the pages, else no real blemishes. It is boldly signed in blue ink to the title page. A real collectors' item!
