No jacket (issued with a glassine one).Hughes' first and most famous novel, publilshed in America as The Innocent Voyage, the book "is a stirring tale about five English schoolchildren who are kidnapped by Captain Jonsen and his crew of pirates during a voyage to England. . The novel was unusual for its unsentimental portrayal of childhood, which broke with Victorian conventions and pioneered a new realism" (Cambridge Guide to Literature in English, p. 484). Description: 283pp. Octavo [21 cm] 1/4 orange cloth with decorative floral paper covered boards and a gilt stamped title on the spine. Very good. The covers are lightly rubbed and bumped. The spine is discolored and subtly stained. There is a 1/4 inch loss from the cloth at the head of the spine. There are multiple small light moisture stains on the front cover near the spine. The underlying boards are exposed along the edges. There is a bookseller's small label on the rear pastedown. The pages are mildly browned. Signed by Hughes on the limitation page. #118 of 150 copies. Hughes's first novel, A High Wind in Jamaica, was published in 1928 and was a best seller in the United Kingdom and America.

Description: First UK edition. 1929. 150 copies were printed for sale in a deluxe binding, signed by Richard Hughes. This is No.141. Near Fine in publisher's 1/4 buckram with decorative hand blocked paper boards. Spine very lightly sunned as is usual in this edition,the page block is bright, white and clean with no markings. Titles and top edge gilt. Pages uncut with some toning to the fore edge - this has not affected the page surfaces however. Published in the USA as 'The Innocent Voyage', the title was changed to its better known title, 'A High Wind in Jamaica" for the UK publication in September the same year. A very nice copy indeed.
