Caresse Crosby, born Mary Phelps Jacob into a prominent New England family, married Harry Crosby and moved to France in 1922. Two years later they founded the Black Sun Press, the great modernist imprint, and published Joyce, Hart Crane, Lawrence, and others. 19, rue de Lille was their Paris residence. After Harry Crosby committed suicide in 1929, Caresse carried on Black Sun Press and founded Crosby Continental Editions. Her later memoir is entitled "The Passionate Years"; Geoffrey Wolff's "Black Sun. The Brief Transit and Violent Eclipse of Harry Crosby" offers a counterbalancing perspective. Blue paper over boards.
