Bookplate of Frederic C.Thomas. Ink presentation on half-title page: "To Roberta and Freddie--To the stables. Very sincerely--Paul Brown '31," below a large ink drawing of a rider leading a steeplechaser. From the rider's disgruntled look, they have fallen and are headed back "to the stables." Traces of pencil under-drawing. "History of the Grand National steeplechase [with] special emphasis on the design of the course as well as the 1928, 1929 and 1930 races, which Brown had witnessed" (Biscotti, Paul Brown). The first book that Brown both wrote and illustrated--and what a debut. Thomas, a well-known jump rider, was a three-time winner of the Meadow Brook Hunt Cup (1924, 1925, 1933).
