This copy is number 41. 8vo, pp. viii, [2], 384; original pictorial green cloth stamped in red and white, top edges stained green, limitation statement signed by Tarkington on front pastedown, some light wear and rubbing. "Politics and love in a growing mid-west town of the pre-Babbitt era when moonlight still created glamour." The first printing of the first edition was published in 1899 and The Author's Autograph Edition, signed by Tarkington on a special plate affixed to the front pastedown, was issued in 1900. The Gentleman from Indiana was Tarkington's debut book.
