Price: US$95.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: "An enthralling mystery, a breathtaking rollercoaster ride through a world of ideas and aberrations, an adventure into the modern mind," says the publisher's blurb. SIGNED by the author at title page, compared to the true First English Edition, published in limited fashion by the Franklin Library, the signature here being compared favorably to that signature. Umberto Eco (1932-2016) was an Italian medievalist, bibliopole, philosopher, essayist, semiotician, novelist and cultural ambassador and a critic on a range of issues. Best known for 1980's The Name of the Rose, an execrable film but a fine historical mystery that combined formal semiotics in fiction and biblical analysis, poison applied ingeniously and medieval studies, literary theory and Sean Connery's Scottish brogue. Translated from the original Italian by William Weaver. Foucault's Pendulum, his 1988 novel, touches on similar themes. It's superb, it's cerebral, it's wildly entertaining and involves several literary editors but who fabricate a hoax, a conspiracy theory that takes on the Templar Knights, Stonehenge, the Hebrew Cabbala, and Brazilian takes on Haitian Vodoun religion. And then stuff comes true! Near Fine condition in an Imperial octavo hardcover format, specifically clean, minimal rubbing to extremities. Bright and shiny dust jacket, illustrated, little worn. 641 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.

ABOUT THIS BOOK: Bored with their work, three Milanese editors cook up "the Plan," a hoax that connects the medieval Knights Templar with other occult groups from ancient to modern times. This produces a map indicating the geographical point from which all the powers of the earth can be controlled â€" a point located in Paris, France, at Foucault's Pendulum. But in a fateful turn the joke becomes all too real, and when occult groups, including Satanists, get wind of the Plan, they go so far as to kill one of the editors in their quest to gain control of the earth. Orchestrating these and other diverse characters into his multilayered semiotic adventure, Eco has created a superb cerebral entertainment.(Publisher).
