The front board is warped. With 12 tipped-in illustrations by Kay Nielsen. Printed tissue guards. Number 359 in an Edition de Luxe limited to 500 copies. Signed and numbered by the Danish-born American artist, Kay Nielsen, on the limitation page. Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) was one of the most significant illustrators during the early 20th century along with Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac. Nielsen's illustrations were influenced by oriental art, the style of Aubrey Beardsley, and the Art Nouveau movement.

Description: Signed limited edition, number 275 of 500 copies, signed by the illustrator. One of the most exquisite books from the Golden Age of Illustration. The publishers issued both Nielsen's Hans Andersen and Detmold's Arabian Nights in their Christmas list for 1924 (under the heading "Give the Best Art Books"). The Nielsen was listed first. The volume gathers 16 classic stories by Hans Christian Andersen, including "The Tinder Box", "The Real Princess" and "The Snow Queen". Kay Nielsen contributed 12 colour plates and other illustrations. Quarto. Original vellum, spine and front cover lettered and elaborately blocked in gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Colour frontispiece and 11 colour plates, with captioned tissue-guards, full-page illustrations, decorations and initial letters throughout by Nielsen. Covers slightly bowed and soiled, some loss and cockling to fixed endpapers, some light browning; a very good copy.

Quarto. 197, [3, blank] pages; twelve tipped-in colour plates (with captioned tissue guards) as well as full page and intertextual black and white illustrations by Kay Nielsen. Original vellum over boards decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine, top edge gilt, fore-edge and tail untrimmed, dark blue cloth dust jacket. Boards splayed, corners a bit bumped, board edges a bit bumped light scattered foxing on vellum, small speckle stains on lower edges. Text block edges lightly toned, occasional faint to light foxing, small mark on front free endpaper, offsetting along fore-edge of title page, occasional creasing on tissue guards. Dust jacket has moderate dampstaining along edges with some minor chipping and loss, foxing on verso, general handling wear. Still, a very nice, clean copy with beautiful illustrations.
