Description: 1st ed., original cloth boards, dustjacket, many b&w illus (both full-page and text illus), pp ix, 214. Presentation copy, signed by the author in the year of publication. The original, non-price clipped dustjacket is worn to the edges, particularly to the top of the spine, with several very small closed tears. The war diary of the renowned artist Edward Ardizzone, from July 1943 to May 1945. Ardizzone (1900 - 1979) was appointed as an official war artist. The diary recounts his experiences in Sicily, Italy, Egypt, Algiers, Normandy, Denmark and Germany, lavishly illustrated with black and white sketches in his distinctive style. The painting on the wraparound dustjacket is "Naval Control Post on the Beaches of Normandy, 1944".
