Description: Second Edition. Hardback. No Dust Jacket. 8vo. pp xi, 440. Original publisher's black cloth, lettered gilt at the spine. Attractive bookplate of the film director, Bryan Forbes on the front pastedown with the B.J.F monogram and a stylised tree with pine cones and a 'Napoleonic' bee beneath. The pine cones refer to his house 'Seven Pines' at Virginia Water. Good copy of this long out of print landmark novel. Inscribed by Aldington to Richard Weil 1944 with an added satirical poem on yellow paper pasted in, "Richard Neil from Richard Aldington - This book was written with serious intent, I still stick to every word. 1944." A rare association copy. Some nicking and chipping at head spine and faint wear, otherwise near very good.

Description: Quarter calf leather binding with marbled boards. Spine has five raised bands, black morocco title label and gilt ornaments. Dyed top page edge has faded slightly, very clean text throughout. Retained in the binding is the original leading blank, signed and dated by the author: 'Charles E. Bramwell (?) from Richard Aldington, Amalfi. Dec. 1929.' A rare signed copy of Aldington's first novel, an anti-war classic, housed in an excellent fine binding. Overall condition is Very Good Plus.
