The novel is a reflection on the Stalinist purges of the old Bolshevik guard during the 1930s as told from the perspective of the fictional character N. S. Rubashov. Of particular interest is Koestler's exploration of the psychology of the ex-revolutionary to confess to crimes that one did not commit in order to offer oneself as scapegoat for the revolution.
