Lacking jacket.This book was inscribed for Miss Mary Mauson by T.S. Eliot. during his visit to Concord Massachusetts on Saturday May 31, 1947. On the following Tuesday the twenty-fifth year of "The Waste Land" he delivered the Commencement address titled "On Poetry" at Concord Academy, a secondary school for young women.He opened with "It is a time-honored custom, at every Commencement everywhere, for somebody to make a speech to the Graduating Class. My own belief is that the Graduating Class are usually just the ones who donâ??t listen to it.â? He went on to say â??The usual Commencement speaker, I imagine, is someone who has made a successful life in one definite line or another. But, if there is one thing the poet is not, he is not a successful man.â?A poem is enclosed, presumably by the recipient Miss Mauson regarding her impressions on meeting T.S. Eliot. Her first lineâ?¦ â??How unpleasant to meet Mr Eliot!â?.
