Roth, Henry. Call It Sleep.. New York, Pageant Books, 1960., 1960.

Price: US$425.00 + shipping

Description: Second edition (first thus) with critical apparatus, history, and appreciation. Very good copy in very good, price-clipped dust jacket. Signed by Roth on the half-title. Roth parted company with the dominant social-realist strain of his contemporaries in this introspective, impressionistic story. This edition rescued the novel from oblivion. History by Henry U. Ribalow, critical introduction by Maxwell Geismar, and a personal appreciation by Meyer Levin. The real-life Roth family lived in Brownsville, a then somewhat remote, heavily Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn, before moving to the Lower East Side: frying pan, meet fire.
