Description: Cloth-backed decorative tan boards in red and black. 8vo. First edition, first issue of the author's first book with misprints on pages 196 and 202. Signed by the author on the title page. A very good copy with some light fading to the cloth spine. The text is very good with some scattered foxing and some light creasing to the upper corner of the first 10 pages.

Description: Red and black patterned boards backed with red cloth. 8vo. No dust jacket. First edition, first issue with misprints on pages 196 and 202. Inscribed by the author in 1965 on the title page. The noted playwright's first book, a novel about a young American in post-war Rome who meets a secret community of European royalty, expatriate Americans and a Roman Cardinal. A very good, bright copy with almost no wear but some light fading to the spine. The text is very good with some light spotting to a few margins.

Description: Thornton Wilder (1897-1975) inscribed and signed this excised title page from his first novel, The Cabala, published in 1926 by Albert & Charles Boni of New York. He writes: “For Herbert E Morris with the best wishes of Thornton Wilder.” Wilder was an American playwright and novelist who was awarded the Pulitzer Prize three times (The Bridge of San Luis Rey, Our Town, The Skin of Our Teeth). He also won the National Book Award for The Eighth Day. 8” x 5”. The verso indicates this is the title page from the second and third printing, published July, 1926. Condition: Fine condition with a clear, bold signature.

Laid in is an AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED in full by the author dated 18 February 1941 on his personal stationary to a Mr. Ording returning some books and explaining that he "found it impossible to inscribe each of them." Description: The first edition, published by Albert and Charles Boni in 1926. Bound in publishers red cloth and patterned boards. This copy has been inscribed by Wilder; Annetha L. Wilson. With all the best wishes of the author. Thornton Wilder. The exceedingly uncommon dust jacket lacks the upper one third, narrowing rapidly and in triangular fashion for about one inch into the front panel. The paper abscence is more pronounced to the rear panel, with a triangular section missing which extends roughly half way across its breadth. The book itself is near fine, with just a touch of fading to the spine - consistent with the jacket chips.

Inscribed by the author on the FFEP, "For Juan Lopez / from his friend / Thornton Wilder / May 22, 1926 / Princeton, N.J. / 'I won't tell you whether this is true, or an allegory, or just nonsense,' p. 219." Book is very near fine, with just a little light rubbing at spine tips and along edges of boards. Dust jacket somewhat sunned along spine; and lightly chipped along the edges (including a large chip at tail of spine, not affecting text); but presents very nicely in mylar. An excellent copy of the author's first book, with a warm inscription, marking his time at Princeton.
