Frontispiece and seven additional inserted plates by J. Allen St. John. Publisher's red cloth, spine and front lettered in black; all text block edges trimmed; original illustrated dust jacket with chessboard design and $1.90 price on rear panel. Spine ends gently pushed; minor shelf wear at extremities of binding; minor discoloration at front board. Endpapers and text block softly dulled, with foxing at endpapers and text block edges; some further, milder foxing scattered throughout interior margins. Jacket fairly worn and soiled, with nicking and chipping at spine and flap fold ends; handful of minuscule tears and creasing along edges; some soiling and rubbing at verso, with two tiny pieces of clear tape reinforcing short tears at verso.
