Condition: Near Fine

Description: Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (1926) All the Sad Young Men , US first edition, first printing, published by Charles Scribner s Sons. Signed and inscribed in blue ink in the year of publication to businessman and philantropist Robert Ingersoll Ingalls Jr: For Bob Ingalls, In memory of a summer on the Baltic Sea from His Faithfully, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Juan-les-Pins 1926. First state book with all first issue points present: Scribner s seal and 1926 with no subsequent printings mentioned on the copyright page. Batter type on page 38, line 6-9 (left margin), page 248, line 21-24 (left margin) as called for. First issue dust jacket with the lips not battered. Provenance: The Fitzgeralds stayed at Juan-les-Pins on the Riviera from March until December 1926. Robert Ingersoll Ingalls Jr (1906-68) was the son of Robert Ingersoll Ingalls Sr (1882-1951), the founder of Ingalls Iron Works and Ingalls Shipbuilding. Jr inherited 90% of his father s business. This copy was part of the Maurice Neville collection, sold in April 2004 at Sotheby s. Condition: a near fine book with clean boards and with the lettering clear and vibrant on the spine. A little offsetting to the endpapers, and a few pages overopened. The dust jacket is beautiful and near fine with just a little edge wear to the head of spine and with a faint stain on the front cover, remaining in outstanding condition given its age. All the Sad Young Men was published at the end of February 1926. It was his third collection of stories (containing nine), including several of his finest: The Rich Boy, Winter Dreams, The Baby Party, Absolution, and The Sensible Thing. Juan-les-Pins, the location of the inscription, was mentioned by Fitzgerald in his seminal Tender is the Night (1934). In fact, Fitzgerald started writing the novel whilst staying there but was unable to finish it before his return to America. Scarce in such beautiful condition let alone inscribed. It seems easier to find inscribed copies of The Great Gatsby (1925) than of All the Sad Young Men (1926). First and Fine
