Michener was taken in as an infant by his adoptive mother and later worked as a teacher and book editor. He won the Pulitzer Prize for his fiction debut Tales of the South Pacific (1947), which was adapted into a hit musical and film. Other works included The Source (1965), Texas (1985) and The Covenant (1980). A regular bestselling author, Michener died on October 16, 1997.
