Sanford, John. A Man Without Shoes [SIGNED]. Black Sparrow Press, Santa Barbara, 1982.

Price: US$90.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: 452 numbered pp + 1; HB. A registered and limited edition, this is No. 345 of 2,000. Signed by Sanford on the registration page. Pages: clean, bright, tight, b.e./f.e. deckled; front hinge starting, several pp scuffed, w/ and extra page tipped in before ffep to mask one such scuff. This book had a rough publication history - Sanford was a Communist at a time when that was most unpopular. From the NY Times: "When 'A Man Without Shoes' was finished in 1947, it was like a beached whale, stranded high and dry and scarcely able to breathe. The cold war and Congressional investigations were already making all radical politics suspect, even when couched in the language of fervent Americanism. . . . the book was submitted to some thirty publishers, and thirty-some times it was declined. Finally, in 1951, Sanford had the novel printed privately in Los Angeles by Saul Marks's Plantin Press." That Plantin Press book received a new title page an introduction, and was Published by Black Sparrow. There is a slight variation between the original leaves and the new added fore-material.
