Second and final collection of Faulkner's poetry published during his lifetime, comprising forty-four numbered poems, of which fourteen had appeared previously, wholly or in part. "William Faulkner's new volume of poems is immediately notable for the number of experiments in imitation which it contains. . . . In the first of his forty-four poems, Mr. Faulkner treats of a drawing room full of 'All the Dead Pilots' in a strict 'Prufrock' and 'Portrait of a Lady' idiom. In the third poem he yields to the thrill of hallucination, and he gets it with Hart Crane's meansâ€"a dazzling eruption of metaphors on a blank verse norm. In poem IV he writes a complete E. E. Cummings poem and throughout the volume he works in a few patented tricks (even Mr. Cummings's favorite prefix Un-). Almost any student given the anonymous poems XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV would spot them as the work of A. E. Housman." (William Gorman, "William Faulkner, Poet," New York Sun, April 21, 1933, p. 25) N. Price: US$1500.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Signed limited first edition of the last collection of poems published within Faulkner's lifetime. Though the 54 poems of A GREEN BOUGH show the heavy imprint of Swinburne, Eliot and Housman, the traces of Faulkner are there beneath them, with the author's characteristic themes and preoccupations showing through his consciously elevated poetic manner: the measured lines of poem VI ("Man comes, man goes, and leaves behind / The bleaching bones that bore his lust") are the product of the same hand that wrote in SOLDIERS' PAY, "Sex and death: the front door and the back door of the world." 8.5'' x 6.25''. Original tan cloth with black lettering. Two wood engravings by Ward mounted on front board. Frontispiece engraving by Ward. 67, [3] pages. Edition of 360 copies of which 350 were for sale, this copy no. 87. Signed by Faulkner at colophon. Bookplate to front paste-down. Light wear and soil to boards; spine toned; light rippling to frontispiece engraving.
