DREISER, Theodore. A GALLERY OF WOMEN. New York: Horace Liveright., 1929.

Price: US$155.08 + shipping

Description: Limited edition, no. 361 of 560 copies numbered and signed by the author. Two volumes. Quarter parchment over black paper-covered boards with silver decoration, titles in black to the spines. Fore-edge and bottom edge untrimmed. A very good or better set, the bindings square and firm with a little marking to the parchment spines and minor rubbing to the extremities. The contents with a little toning to page edges are otherwise in good order and clean throughout, free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. An excellent example. A collection of fifteen semi-autobiographical sketches of women that Dreiser knew, focussing on themes of sexual and economic self-assertion. "Dreiser's interweaving of biography, autobiography, and fiction has created a text that must be seen as central in unravelling the author's (and his society's) ambivalence about the roles and powers of the New Woman who would come into her own in the course of the twentieth century." (Gammel, A Theodore Dreiser Encyclopedia). Provenance: From the library of Martin Stone. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request.
