Slipcase shows a few isolated chips to extremities. The renowned Irish author Samuel Beckett translated Apollinaire's famous poem Zone (1913), from French into English for this special Dolmen Press edition. Apollinaire's experimental prose and poetry gave rise to many of the literary and artistic movements of the 20th century, including the modernist movement to which Beckett belonged. Both Apollinaire and Beckett's work address the tragedy, comedy, and alienation of modern existence. (Wikipedia) The 155 lined poem Zone follows a narrator as he walks through the city of Paris, encountering prostitutes, the poor, and refugees. Apollinaire utilizes a stream of consciousness technique to "confront and transform worldly experience in its diversity from the crises and joys of personal emotional life to the advancements of technology and the tragedies of war" (Poetry Foundation). In partnership with Beckett, The Dolmen Press issued this special printing of ZONE, printed on high quality laid paper with handset type and signed by Beckett himself. The Dolmen Press was an Irish fine press printing outlet founded by Liam Miller and his wife Josephine in 1951. The Press printed Irish poetry and literature using a small handpress. Each book had carefully designed page layouts, typography, and illustrations. The Press's commitment to printing as a craft and its focus on Irish authors had a lasting influence on Irish publishing. The Dolmen Press publications, including the present copy, exemplify the rich culture and heritage of Irish craftsmanship, literature, and book design.
