Price: US$128.28 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First impression of the first UK edition, with the iconic dustwrapper illustration by John Sewell. ***Please note that a previous owner has removed the front free endpaper of this copy. ***Very good in dark brown cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. No bumps. Corners sharp. Boards clean and unmarked. Page block edges slightly marked. No reading lean to the binding - just a light vertical reading crease to the spine. Spine tight. Internally also very good. However, please note that, as mentioned, a previous owner has removed the front free endpaper (probably an extreme way of removing an inscription) and there is slight splitting to the paper at the gutter. There is also a light water stain at the bottom edge of the front endpaper. There is also light staining to the fore-edge of the rear free endpaper. The internal pages are very clean, with no foxing and creases or tears. No ownership details. ***In a very good colour-illustrated dustwrapper, that has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £2.95 net. The dustwrapper is correct for the first impression, having no mention of impressions on the front flap. The dustwrapper is complete, with just some slight rubbing and creasing at the extremities, mainly at the head and tail of the spine. No chips or tears. Very unusually for this title, there is no fading even to the spine (the light green titles on the spine are usually found faded to white, but these are still green). ***Please note that there is some wrinkling to the front panel of the dustwrapper, where it has been affected at some point by water. This isn't very noticeable, and doesn't really detract too much. Dustwrapper otherwise bright and clean. ***224mm x 148mm. 412 pages. ***'This extraordinary, almost unclassifiable work has been hailed as one of the most exciting books to come out of America in recent years. On the simplest level, it is the story of a summer month's motorcycle trip taken by the narrator with his eleven-year-old son from their home in Minnesota to California. While they ride, the narrator delivers to the reader a series of discourses which range over a multitude of topics, from motorcycle maintenance itself, through a search for how to live and an inquiry into 'what is best' to a philosophy that can reconcile science, religion and humanism. ***But on another, and connecting, level the book is the story of the narrator's visit to the 'forgotten tomb of his past' and his confrontation there with a ghost. The ghost is called Phaedrus and is his former self, a brilliant, questioning man who in his attempt to make sense of his life went mad, underwent shock therapy and 'died' - and has now returned. He and his son have to face that ghost together. He also has to face the fact that his relationship with his son has been deteriorating during the journey. This is the last problem to which he finds a reconciliation. ***An Autobiography of the mind and the body, "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" takes the reader on a trip - in a literal, emotional and philosophical sense - that is not only unforgettable but also unlike anything he has previously experienced.' ***'"Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" is an unforgettable trip'. Time magazine (Quote and review quote taken from the flaps of the dustwrapper) ***A very good copy of the first impression of the first UK edition, in its original attractively colour-illustrated first impression dustwrapper, designed by John Sewell. Although not a perfect copy, first impressions of the UK first edition are hard to find now. A cult classic and an iconic title. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Pirsig, Robert M.. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. London The Bodley Head 1974, 1974.

Price: US$288.62 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing. Published by The Bodley Head in London, 1974. This is a near fine copy. The dust wrapper, greatly illustrated by John Sewell, has some slight curling at the top edge, some corner wear and some light surface scratching. There is an area of separation to both spine tips. It has not been price clipped, rightly showing the original £2.95 net price. The boards are free from notable chips and marks, proudly bound in the publisher's brown buckram. The internals are immaculate, as are the text blocks. Overall, this is a near fine copy and free from inscriptions. Rare. It is a work of fictionalized autobiography and is the first of Pirsig's texts in which he explores his concept of Quality.
