COLERIDGE, Samuel Taylor.. ZAPOLYA: a Christmas tale, in two parts: the prelude entitled "The Usurper's Fortune;" and the sequel entitled "The Usurper's Fate.".. London: printed for Rest Fenner., 1817.

Price: US$1089.69 + shipping

Description: 8vo, pp. [viii], 128; complete with the half title; a fine copy, uncut and partly unopened, in the original boards, rebacked. The Nowell Smith copy, with booklabels. First edition. This drama was composed by Coleridge in rural exile at Calne in 1815-16, 'in humble imitation of the Winter's Tale of Shakespeare'. In February the Literary Fund gave him £30 and Lord Byron, out of the blue, £100. These gifts enabled him to return to London, where he met Byron (for the first and only time), showed him Zapolya and recited Kubla Khan. To his credit, Byron - himself beset by troubles and about to leave England for good - remained generous in spirit, read the play straight through, heard the recital and was 'highly struck' with it, and urged him to publish. The play was eventually issued by Rest Fenner, after Murray had published Christabel and the sale had proved disappointing, but it was to prove the beginning of an unfortunate entanglement with Fenner and his backer, the Rev. Thomas Curtis, neither of whom were reliable or honest. Wise, Coleridge, 46; Tinker 700.
