Conrad, Joseph. Youth: A Narrative and Two Other Stories.. William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh and London, 1902.

Price: US$3500.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, first issue containing the first appearance in book form of Heart of Darknessâ€"“one of the most powerful short novels in the English language” (Farrow, 14). Octavo, original illustrated cloth with gilt titles to the spine. In very good condition. A nice example. Youth and Heart of Darkness were the first of Conrad’s stories to attract wider attention. Conrad’s “account of a superman running an ivory business in the heart of the Congo… is a masterpiece of sinister deterioration” (Connolly, Modern Movement 14). “A vast body of critical commentary has mined the dense richness and consciously paradoxical quality of this seminal modernist work, with its modern version of a Dantean journey into the Inferno, its Faustian figure of Kurtz provoking ambivalently fascinated horror… The influence of Heart of Darkness can be traced in writers as diverse as T.S. Eliot, Andre Gide, H.G. Wells, [Chinua] Achebe, William Golding, Graham Greene, V.S. Naipaul, and George Steiner, while Francis Coppola’s film Apocalypse Now taps some of its rich imaginative possibilities by transposing it to the Vietnam War” (Stringer, 292).

CONRAD, Joseph.. Youth: A Narrative and Two Other Stories.. Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1902, 1902.

Price: US$3842.59 + shipping

Description: First edition, first impression. The volume marks the first book-form publication of three novellas by Conrad, including "Heart of Darkness", his best-known and most influential work. "A depressing African journey into the Congo Free State in 1890, when he travelled overland and in a paddle-steamer, would be recollected and powerfully transformed in his masterpiece. 'Heart of Darkness', which offered a forewarning of the Hitlerian demagogue, seems virtually inexhaustible in its recessive ambiguities and paradoxes" (ODNB). The story continues to attract fierce debate and criticism. The three novellas were originally serialized in Blackwood's Magazine in 1898, 1899, and 1902. Of this volume, Conrad wrote: "Youth and Heart of Darkness are the first short stories of mine which attracted attention to my work in a wider sphere. Most critics dismissed The End of the Tether either with contempt or with a few cursory remarks" (Wise). This copy has the 32-page publisher's catalogue at the end in the earlier state, dated "10/02"; other copies have the catalogue dated "11/02". Cagle gives no priority between the two states: "the first printing, of 3,150 copies, was completed late in October 1902 with the first bound copies reaching the publisher early in November". Cagle A7a(1). Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover lettered in black, decorations to spine and front cover in black, 32 pp. publisher's catalogue at rear. Bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown. Spine ends bumped, cloth faintly rubbed, outer leaves lightly foxed, contents otherwise clean. A very good copy.

The volume was published in 1902 by William Blackwood and Sons. The collection includes “Heart of Darkness”, considered one of the finest examples of modern fiction. The three stories that appear in "Youth, a Narrative" were serialized in Blackwood’s Magazine previous to their collection. The month and date of their first serialization were as follows: “Youth” (September 1898), “Heart of Darkness” (February - April 1899), and “The End of the Tether” (July - September 1902). After the success of the short story “Youth” in 1898, publisher William Blackwood offered to include the story in a collection if Conrad could publish two more works. Conrad consented and these stories were the material for this, his second volume of short fiction after "Tales of Unrest" (1898).'
