Covers clean and unmarked. No bumping or rubbing to corners. In a VG+ dust jacket with no fading or toning to spine. Not price clipped. "You Only Live Twice" is the twelfth novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series, first published in 1964. The novel is a direct sequel to "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and explores the emotional aftermath of the events in the previous book. In "You Only Live Twice," James Bond is deeply affected by the tragic events of the previous novel, including the death of his wife, Tracy. He is given a mission by his superiors to infiltrate Japan and investigate the activities of a secretive organization known as the Union Corse. Bond assumes a new identity and immerses himself in Japanese culture as he pursues his mission. He encounters challenges and adversaries, including the mysterious and deadly Blofeld, the head of SPECTRE. The novel delves into themes of identity, rebirth, and revenge as Bond seeks closure and confronts the man responsible for his personal losses. "You Only Live Twice" is also known for its detailed portrayal of Japanese culture and society. The book was later adapted into a James Bond film of the same name, although the film version differs significantly from the novel in terms of plot and characters.

Description: This is a well preserved copy of 007's twelfth outing. First edition ('First published March 1964')The book is very good plus: the black (or dark-grey?) cloth bound boards are clean and unmarked - no scratches, dents or bumps; all edges straight, all corners sharp. The text block has a very slight lean but is tightly bound. The edges of the text block are all spotless. Internally the pages are clean and unmarked apart from a previous resale price and a note to the effect that the book is a 1st edition published in 1964, which are written in pencil at the top of the page which precedes the half title page. However, there is also a note, again in pencil, at the top of the ffep which appears to be 'New eps'. There are signs that the bamboo-effect end papers have been replaced (albeit neatly and professionally) and that the ffep has been affixed (glued) to the succeeding blank page in order to conceal some scribbled notes and a couple of inked stamps; this isn't immediately or easily visible and indeed I didn't notice it until I happened to see it against a light. There is a little graze on the bottom right hand corner of the rear paste down with a very small area of white showing through. The dust jacket is in fine condition - fresh looking and stiff to the touch, much more so than would be expected for a book of this age (nearly sixty years): the colours of the illustration, the petals, the frog (toad?) and the fly its grasp are remarkably unfaded and there are no tears, chips or extraneous marks, though is some wrinkling along the fold line of the front flap. The publisher's original price (16s. net) is in place. The asking price (£250.00) takes into account the manipulation of the end papers described above; were it not for that the book would be worth at least twice as much. See five photos of this book and do ask for more if that would help.

A first edition, first impression of this work, with 'First Published 1964' to the copyright. In the original unclipped dustwrapper by Richard Chopping. The eleventh James Bond novel, 'You Only Live Twice' starts eight months after the murder of Tracy Bond, seeing James Bond drinking and gambling heavily, and making mistakes on his assignments. He is sent to Japan on a semi-diplomatic mission, and ends up being challenged by the head of the Japanese Secret Service to kill a mysterious Doctor Guntram Shatterhand. From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, from her library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. After being widowed at 25, Audrey married the fabulously wealthy American department store heir, Marshall Field III, later divorcing him and marrying the Honorable Peter Pleydell-Bouverie. In 1940 she bought Julians Park and redesigned the interior. Her library was impressive, with many examples of her own bookbinding.Audrey was an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty, the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII (though she was also rumoured to be his daughter, or the lover of King Edward VIII), featured in the 'Book of Beauty' by Cecil Beaton. She had many high profile friends, such as Winston Churchill, Coco Chanel, Fred Astaire, and Nancy Mitford, a sparkling hostess of the Edwardian period, her hedonistic antics bringing her into the Bright Young Things. In the original publisher's cloth binding, in the original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, fine. Dustwrapper with some light edge wear, resulting in some small chips and closed tears. A little discolouration and a few marks and spots to the wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Fine

Maclean, Peter and Ian Fleming were reunited at literary events, each being published by Jonathan Cape. Condition: Near Fine

Description: London: Jonathan Cape, 1964 8vo., black cloth, japanese characters in gilt to upper board; lettered in silver to backstrip with publisher's device to foot; wood-effect endpapers; in the classic Richard Chopping dust jacket (16s. net) featuring a poisonous toad grasping a dragonfly under the shelter of a pink chrysanthemum; pp. [xiv], 15-255, [i]; essentially a fine copy, some very minor toning to edges of jacket and shelf-wear to the lower panel the only defects.  First edition, first impression, first state. Binding A in black cloth.   The final book in Fleming's 'Blofeld Trilogy', following Thunderball and On Her Majesty's Secret Service. It features the usual descriptions of intelligence-gathering and code-breaking networks which Fleming himself was familiar with, having run covert operations during the war. In the Autumn of 1962 the author had travelled to Japan, adamant that his next novel would be set in the 'Land of the Rising Sun'. During his time there, he kept a series of notebooks in which he jotted down observations about the people, culture, and phrases he encountered, as well as plot ideas for his upcoming work. The first manuscript appeared in 1963.  You Only Live Twice was Fleming's eleventh novel, and the last published within his lifetime. In 1967, it was adapted into the fifth film in the Eon Production series, featuring  the best Bond, Sean Connery, in the title role. The screenplay was produced by Roald Dahl, who was a close friend of the author, but who took liberties with the plot - only a few elements of the novel, and a limited number of characters, survive from the original text.  A superior copy of this popular book in the James Bond series.

The oversized dust wrapper is in very good condition with chipping, and associated creasing to the spine tips, and to the upper front panel. A small stain to the rear panel, but overall a nice example of the proof dust wrapper.

FLEMING ,IAN. You Only Live Twice.. London: Jonathan Cape, 1964.

Price: US$19212.96 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: London: Jonathan Cape, 1964, 8vo, FIRST EDITION, FIRST IMPRESSION, FIRST STATE, PRESENTATION COPY inscribed by the author to Robert Harling: ("To | Robert | But not to read! | from | Ian") to front free endpaper, original black cloth, lettered in silver, Japanese characters on upper cover in gilt, wood-grain effect endpapers, Dust- Jacket, near fine condition, collector's black quarter morocco clamshell box. Robert Harling was a close friend of Fleming's following their service together in naval intelligence in the Second World War. He is known for creating the "Tea Chest" font used on 10 dust-jackets for the Bond books and possibly being the model upon which Fleming based the character of James Bond. He featured as a character in two books (as a police inspector in Thunderball and as a typographer in The Spy Who Loved Me). In You Only Live Twice, Commander Bond's obituary on pages 240-241 matches Harling's own account of his childhood, where he was orphaned as a child and raised in Kent, again showing the ample inspiration Fleming took from his friend. Fleming and Harling were friends for 25 years, attested in Harling’s personal memoir of the author, published in 2020.

FLEMING, Ian. You Only Live Twice. Jonathan Cape, 1964, 1964.

Price: US$22415.12 + shipping

Description: Octavo. Original black boards, spine lettered in silver, Japanese characters blocked in gilt to front cover, bamboo-patterned endpapers. With dust jacket. Housed in a custom dark blue quarter morocco folding box. A very good copy, minor lean to spine, edges lightly toned and foxed, but internally still attractive and with bright and clear inscription from the author, in like dust jacket, toned, edges rubbed and nicked, but still sharp. First edition, second issue, presentation copy, in the "A" binding, signed and inscribed by the author to the front free endpaper, "To Elizabeth. Get well soon! from Ian Fleming.". A fine example of Fleming's characteristic handwriting with flourish and underlines, boldly signed. This second issue of the first edition can be distinguished by the "published March" copyright page. This copy was inscribed in March 1964 by the then-ailing Fleming, who was suffering from poor health. He died from a heart attack in August 1964. The recipient of this copy was a nursemaid of the author during those final months, who was briefly unwell herself, hence the inscription. A scarce inscribed copy, this title being published only months before the author's death; another inscribed copy exists from around the same time to Lisl Jokl, Fleming's former girlfriend and one of only four people to whom he left a legacy of £500 upon his death. This copy is from the significant Ian Fleming collection of Martin Schøyen (b.1940), with his bookplate. Schøyen's private collection of manuscripts, which span all cultures and all time periods, is one of the largest and most comprehensive of its kind. Gilbert A12a(1.3); The Schøyen Collection No. 93.
