Price: US$44.91 + shipping

Condition: Poor

Description: 1st edition, 12mo, 321pp, frontis + full page line drawings and more in text by H J Ford, mustard boards lettered and illustrated gilt to spine; it's a 1st edition Jim but not as we know it - let's be clear about this, this copy borders on the awful, previous owner's name to half title, boards extensively soiled and worn about edges, extrems, spine hinges and tips, spine darkened to oblivion and a previous owner has attempted to clean it up with what may have been T-cut; not content with that he/she then went on to paint many of the illustrations in watercolour, not insensitively, but it might have been better if they hadn't really but there you are; however it does appear to be all there, and it does not disembowel itself into your lap every you open it. That's about all one can say really - it goes without saying this for some reason is one of the tough ones in the series; Poor/Fair Copy Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall

LANG, Andrew (ed.).. The Yellow Fairy Book.. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1894, 1894.

Price: US$513.31 + shipping

Description: First edition. This fourth instalment in the Fairy Books series includes such well-known stories as Hans Christian Andersen's "The Emperor's New Clothes" and "Thumbelina". Lang defends his practice of intermixing older legends with newer tales in the preface, which responds to criticisms made by the president of the Folklore Society. Henry Justice Ford's (1860-1941) artwork for the series "provided a benchmark in fantasy illustration" (Grolier). Though the Fairy Books are credited to Andrew Lang (1844-1912), he acknowledged in the preface to Lilac (1910) that they "have been almost wholly the work of Mrs [Leonora] Lang, who has translated and adapted them from the French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, Catalan, and other languages". Grolier Children's 100, 51. Octavo. Original yellow cloth, spine lettered and stamped with cat motif in gilt, front cover elaborately blocked in gilt with a tall fairy figure in a sunlit forest setting, black coated endpapers, edges gilt. Frontispiece with tissue guard, 21 engraved plates, further engravings in the text in text, all by H. J. Ford. Publisher's 2-page ads bound at end. Bookseller's ticket of Matthews and Brooke, Bradford, on front pastedown. Spine cocked, spot of wear to rear joint and lower corners, binding slightly rubbed and toned, occasional faint tide marks and foxing to contents. A very good copy.

LANG, Andrew (ed.).. The Yellow Fairy Book. With numerous illustrations by H. J. Ford.. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1894, 1894.

Price: US$577.47 + shipping

Description: First edition of the fourth instalment in Lang's popular "Fairy Book" series, beautifully illustrated by Henry Justice Ford. The Yellow Fairy Book compiles tales from around the world, including well known stories such as "The Emperor's New Clothes" and "Thumbelina". An extremely prolific artist, Ford (1860–1941) began exhibiting his paintings at the Royal Academy of Art in 1892. It was his work as book illustrator, however, that gained him worldwide fame in the 1880s and 1890s. Ford "concentrated on legends and folklore as subjects to illustrate and mixed carefully observed objects from the real world with fantasy creatures from an imaginary world in a very convincing way. His penwork is assured and clear and placed on the page with great decorative effect. A whole generation of Edwardians grew up on Ford's illustrations to Andrew Lang's Fairy tales" (Houfe, p. 140). Simon Houfe, Dictionary of 19th Century Book Illustrators, 1998. Octavo (183 x 124 mm). Contemporary yellow half morocco, spine with raised bands, gilt lettering and floral decoration in compartments, marbled boards and endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Frontispiece, 21 plates, title vignette, and numerous in-text illustrations by H. J. Ford. Extremities lightly rubbed, minor marks to leather, edges foxed, contents generally bright and clean. A very good copy, attractively bound.
