Rawlings, Marjorie Kinnan; Wyeth, N. C. (illustrator). The Yearling. Charles Scribner's Sons, 1939.

Price: US$15.00 + shipping

Description: First illustrated edition; 14 color plates by N. C. Wyeth. The volume is bumped on the spine ends and corners, is lightly soiled, has a toned spine, and is edge rubbed with some light fraying on the spine ends. At some point the hinges split and were carelessly glued back together, so much so that the front endpaper sticks above the text block and the top edge is crimped, wrinkled, and has two short closed tears. Some redeeming qualities: the text with the 14 illustrations are present and have only minor disturbances.

Condition: Fine

Description: (WYETH,N.C.)illus. THE YEARLING by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. NY: Charles Scribner's Sons 1939 (1939 A). 4to, bluish-green cloth, top edge gilt, Fine condition in publisher's blue slip case (case slightly rubbed on edges else sound and VG+) and in a custom-made slipcase. LIMITED TO ONLY 750 COPIES FOR SALE-SIGNED BY BOTH WYETH AND RAWLINGS. Two key facts have emerged about this edition. First, although 750 copies were printed, only 520 copies were actually bound and sent out with the binding, chemise and slip case of this version. The remaining 250 copies were bound in dark blue cloth with a darker blue slipcase and were distributed in the early 1950's. Secondly, according to letters from Rawlings to her editor, as the limited edition sheets were being printed she discovered that there was a line missing on page 196 (between lines 5 and 6). A new signature with the correction was inserted but not before some sheets were distributed. This copy has the uncorrected pages. Illustrated by Wyeth with pictorial endpapers, 14 full page color illustrations, title page decoration, plus 2 special charcoal and wash full page illustrations done for this limited edition. Also included is a facsimile of a 2 page letter by Wyeth discussing the book (not present in the trade edition). Wyeth reportedly traveled to Cross Creek, Rawlings' home, before beginning the artwork, in order to capture the essence of the area. Very scarce. Allen p. 216. Comes with original 3-page letter handwritten by Rawlings.
