Description: Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (1896-1953) was a Florida author who won the Pulitzer Prize for this, her third book. First published in 1938, it was released in 1939 with illustrations by famed illustrator N. C. Wyeth: in a limited edtion in, a Scribner Classic edition, and in a Pulitzer Prize edition. There are 12 color illustrations by Wyeth as well as a pictorial cover and end papers. This copy is the Scribner Classic edition. It is in presentable condition with no owner names, bookplates, or other inner or outer markings, except that the joint at the inside edge of the secont front blank flyleaf is tender--however, the front and rear illustrated end papers are intact. The original black cloth binding and the front cover Wyeth-illustrated color pictorial paste-down is in nice condtion, however the top edge of the spine is pulled. A very clean and sound copy which has obviously benefited from being kept in its original box. Black cloth covered boards with pictorial on-lay to front and gilt titles to spine. Top edge of text block tinted pale orange. Original decorative box in good condition - it has lost one long edge of top but ia still robust. Pictorial on-lay to front and title with $2.50 price label to lower edge. Base of box very sound with some fade/discolouration to decorative paper and a little rubbing here and there. Top of box, as mentioned, has lost one long side but the remaining structure is sound. Some attrition to decorative background paper but front pictorial has only very minor rubbing to a few points around its black border. This edition has twelve colour plates by N. C. Wyeth plus the decorative endpapers and the pictorial on-lays to the front board and to the top of the box. Very rare to find one of the original decorative boxes - especially in such robust condition.

Front and rear jacket covers present well in mylar and the chipping described is not unusual for a book of this age that was printed long before there were mylar protective book covers.
