Description: Octavo, three-quarters leather, 14 volumes. Top edge gilt, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, gilt ruled to the front and rear panel, marbled endpapers. One of 500 numbered copies. This is set number 144. It also includes the three volume Final Memorials of Longfellow by Ticknor and Company published in 1887. All volumes are numbered 144 of 300 copies. Each volume contains the bookplate of noted American poet and publisher Scofield Thayer, best known for his art collection, which is housed in the Metropolitan Mueseum of Art. In near fine condition. Longfellow’s success spanned both sides of the Atlantic: "He wrote some of the most popular poems in American literature, in which he created a new body of romantic American legends," and when he died, "he was the first American whose bust was placed in the Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey" (Columbia University Press). This 14 volume edition includes two volumes of Longfellow’s prose, his translation of Dante in three and his verse in six, including such celebrated works as Tales of a Wayside Inn, The Song of Hiawatha, Christus and The Courtship of Miles Standish.
