Hearn, Lafcadio. Out of the East and Kokoro. Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1922.
Price: US$175.00 + shipping
Condition: Very Good
Description: 512pp. Fine binding. Limited large-paper edition: number 102/750. Volume VII of a sixteen volume set of The Writings of Lafcadio Hearn. Full morocco with oriental-influenced gilt decoration to covers, inner dentelles and five raised bands to spine. *** Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) was a journalist born in Greece (on the island of Lefkada - hence his name), raised in Dublin, and shipped off to America at the age of 19, where he became a journalist and author of a book of Creole cuisine. He was sent as a correspondent to the West Indies, and in 1890 was sent to Japan. He researched Japanese culture, religion and folk-tales, and wrote about them extensively, with the heart of someone who wanted to assimilate the culture rather than write about it from a Westerner's viewpoint. He married Koizumi Setsuko, the daughter of a samurai family where he was teaching, and took a Japanese name, Koizumi Yakumo. *** The two books of this volume, "Kokoro" and "Out of the East", relate Hearn's travels in Japan, and his descriptions of Japanese culture and folklore. Chapters include: "Of the Eternal Feminine", "The Stone Buddha", "Jiujutsu", "In Yokohama", and "In the Twilight of the Gods". *** Four of Hearn's Japanese tales formed the basis of the movie, Kwaidan (1964), by the Japanese director, Masaki Kobayashi. *** Condition: About Very Good, with front outer joint cracked and some wear to the corners of the covers. BAL 7977.
