In this volume; 'Yellowplush' is a series of five comic tales recounting the rise and fall of early-19th century footman Charles Yellowplush. In the 'Fitz-Boodle papers'(1842-3), Thackeray penned his partial autobiography with his personal experiences related to his love life as well as supercilious and brilliant musings on his professions that dwelt on the provisions of culture. The four stories are; 'Fitz-Boodle's Confessions',' Miss Lowe'; 'Dorothea' and 'Ottlla'. 'Cox's Diary' (1840) is a brief satire on the voguish and improbable rags-to-riches stories that attracted great popular following at the time. The story of the rise and fall in society of a jolly barber, whose ambitious wife inherits a fortune when her rich uncle dies. The whole family make a great splurge, commit many ridiculous blunders, and are fleeced right and left by adventurers. When in the end the uncle's lost will is found and the Coxes lose their inheritance, they return to their former obscurity, contented and happy. 'Character Sketches' (1841) contains: 'Artists. Captain Rook and Mr. Pigeon'. A description of the typical blackleg and his victim. 'Fashionable Authoress'. An account of the multifarious works of genius from which Lady Fanny Flummery gains a very sufficient livelihood. Thackeray is best known for his satirical works looking at English society. He tended to be quite savage in his attacks on society, publishing under various pseudonyms in his youth to avoid personal criticism. Financial and family concerns meant he became forced to write for a living after returning to England. from India in 1837. In the latter part of his life he achieved great acclaim for his work and was considered the equal of Charles Dickens.
