Description: 1822 hardback printed by Walker and Greig for various booksellers. Leather bound, with tooled spine. Spine damaged, some wear light bumping to corners, but still handsome. Front hinge cracked with no effect on binding. Light mottling to some of the pages, block true and solid. Contains volume IV of the author's History of the Reign of the Emperor Charles V.

Half leather over marbled boards, black leather labels in gilt, leather scuffed and scratched, corners lightly bumped, ink name and bookplate to endpapers, sporadic light foxing but on the whole, a good clean set, text blocks and bindings tight and square, all maps and present and in excellent condition.

In 1804 he became a secretary of Napoleon, in 1805 Bishop of Poitiers. On 12 May 1808 he was appointed as archbishop of Mechelen (resigned in 1815). In 1812 he was awarded the position of the French ambassador in Warsaw, preparing the Concordat of 1813.
