Tennyson, Alfred Lord. Selected, with Biographical Introduction and Notes, by His Grandson, Charles Tennyson. Becket (First Edition, Good). MacMillan and Co., London, 1884.

Price: US$39.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: FIRST EDITION. Full green cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. Corner bumped with moderate wear at the top & boottom of the spine. Front and back cover a bit mottled. Gift inscription on front free endpage. Overall in GOOD MINUS condition only. Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson (6 August 1809 – 6 October 1892) was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom and is one of the most popular English poets. Much of his verse was based on classical mythological themes, although In Memoriam was written to commemorate his best friend Arthur Hallam, a fellow poet and classmate at Trinity College, Cambridge who was engaged to Tennyson's sister but died from a cerebral hæmorrhage. One of Tennyson's most famous works is Idylls of the King (1885), a series of narrative poems based entirely on King Arthur and the Arthurian tales, as thematically suggested by Sir Thomas Malory's earlier tales on the legendary king. The work was dedicated to Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria. During his career, Lord Tennyson attempted drama, but his plays enjoyed little success even in his lifetime. Tennyson wrote a number of phrases that have become commonplaces of the English language, including: "nature, red in tooth and claw", "better to have loved and lost", "Theirs not to reason why, /Theirs but to do and die", and "My strength is as the strength of ten, /Because my heart is pure". Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

Condition: Near Fine

Description: The first one-volume edition of the Works of Alfred Tennyson. With a frontispiece steel engraving by G. J. Stodart from a photograph by J. Mayall. The work was preceded by a much more expensive ten-volume edition, the one-volume edition being produced to make the popular Poet Laureate's work available at a more affordable price for the general reading public. The poems are arranged in two columns to enable a one-volume edition of the complete works. ***Near fine in green cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are quite clean and unmarked with no marks or stains, just a couple of patches of light fading to the front board. The spine is tight and there are no tears to the fragile cloth covering. The head and tail of the spine are slightly creased, but the edges of the boards are only slightly rubbed. Corners sharp. Page block edges slightly darkened, mainly to the top edge. No significant foxing and no stains. The lower edge of the page block is rough-cut (untrimmed). Internally the pages are clean, with just some sporadic foxing, mainly to the prelims. There are no inscriptions, but an over-zealous previous bookseller has marked the top of the front free endpaper with a £10- price in ink. The paper used is quite high quality and has remained bright and white. Importantly, there is no splitting to the binding which is tight. ***200mm x 135mm. 640 pages. ***Contents: Address To the Queen, Juvenilia including Early Sonnets, The Lady of Shalott, and Other Poems, English Idylls and Other Poems, Enoch Arden, The Princess; A Medley, Experiments, The Window; or, The Song of the Wrens, In Memoriam A. H. Idylls of the King, Queen Mary, Harold, The Lover's Tale, Ballads and Other Poems, H., Maud: A Monodrama, Idylls of the King, Queen Mary, Harold, The Lover's Tale, Ballads and Other Poems, Sonnets, Translations, etc. ***A very nice one-volume first edition of "The Works of Alfred Tennyson" in a late-Victorian cloth binding. A very well-preserved example. A collector's copy. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***

In very good condition. Presentation inscription. As source material for his poetry, Tennyson used a wide range of subject matter ranging from medieval legends to classical myths and from domestic situations to observations of nature. The influence of John Keats and other Romantic poets published before and during his childhood is evident from the richness of his imagery and descriptive writing. He also handled rhythm masterfully. Tennyson was a craftsman who polished and revised his manuscripts extensively, to the point where his efforts at self-editing were described by his contemporary Robert Browning as "insane", symptomatic of "mental infirmity." Few poets have used such a variety of styles with such an exact understanding of metre; like many Victorian poets, he experimented in adapting the quantitative metres of Greek and Latin poetry to English.

Tennyson, Lord Alfred. The Cup and The Falcon.. Macmillan and Co, London, 1884.

Price: US$5500.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of this collection of two Tennyson plays. Octavo, original cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, “Frederick & Jane Locker from Tennyson.” Tennyson has also inscribed seven lines of verse from the original manuscript of The Cup on pages 80 and 81, inserted in the concluding speech of Synorix, "Nay, rather than to clip the flowery robe of Hymen we should add some golden fringe of gorgeousness beyond old use to make the day memorial, when Synorix, first King, Comma, first Queen o' the snow here the richest lot from fate, to live and to die together." In fine condition. Bookplates to the pastedown. Housed in a custom morocco and chemise case. Rare and desirable. Regarded as the chief representative of the Victorian age of poetry, English poet and dramatist, Alfred Lord Tennyson succeeded William Wordsworth as Poet Laureate in 1850. In addition to his major works of poetry, Tennyson wrote several plays, among them his dramas Queen Mary, Harold, The Cup, and The Falcon. Heavily influenced by the strictly metered and often melancholic style of the English Romantic poets, Tennyson’s verse illustrated a mastery of rhythm and descriptive imagery drawing on both the poetic structure and content of classical myths and medieval legends.
