Description: Brown cloth matching set with bevelled boards, embossed keylines, gilt dull and still clearly readable and sharp. Neat private bookplate on inner pastedowns, cracking and shakiness to inner hinges of volume I otherwise gutters tight, some foxing freckles to endpapers of each volume, mostly free of spotting in the text blocks which have occasional light pencil annotations. Volume IV has a splash mark to the front board. Aside from the dulling of age and some creasing to the cloth at the spine ends and minor corner/edge wear this is a very solid and servicable set. Description: complete set of 13 volumes, bound in cream cloth stamped with gilt border decorations to front and blind stamped to rear covers, all pages edges gilt. These little volumes measure just 13cm tall and are still housed in their original boxed case. Interiors all extremely clean with no writing, marks or tears and all pages tight in bindings. Spine covers have faded with age, 2 rear covers have a pencil mark, one front cover has a pencil mark. The box is broken to bottom edges but has at least protected the contents rather well, all 13 volumes are still robust and highly decorative. Note that to send outside the Uk will incur extra shipping due to weight.

On front fore-edge--the closed page ends-- (about one inch high by 6 inches long) there is an ORIGINAL full-color PAINTING showing a green field with fence and sheep and a man with a black hat fornicating (a soldier? a bishop?) with a mostly clothed maiden on top of a drum. THE PICTURE IS TOTALLY INVISIBLE until one slightly fans or bends the text block - then the image suddenly appears. The painting itself is Fine and of high quality with surprisingly fine detail. Book itself is Very Near Fine, one half-inch closed tear on front blank end paper and a small spot on end paper from glue residue. No owner marks. Text is clean and bright as new. Amazing--has to be seen! The painting is totally invisible until the spine is slightly tilted. Pictures sent on request.
