Some expected shelfwear and darkening to the spines, minor chipping to some spine labels, several hinges internally reglued and secure, text blocks sound, pages clean, no names or other markings. Description: Number 187/565 copies, Numbered in each volume and SIGNED by Tarkington in volume one. The half title leaf in volume one announces "The Works of Booth Tarkington in Twelve Volumes" but this statement was changed after the 12th volume (to "The Works of Booth Tarkington"), as subsequent volumes were added to the set beginning with The Magnificent Ambersons [Volume XIII] in 1919. This set includes, in addition to the originally projected 12 volumes, an additional 4 volumes--the aforementioned Magnificent Ambersons, followed by Ramsey Milholland [Volume XIV], Alice Adams [Volume XV] and Gentle Julia [Volume XVI]. This set is uniformly bound in off-white vertically ribbed cloth over very pale lavender colored paper covered boards, uniform spine labels, without jackets, all top edges gilt, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed. A Near Fine set, with a few minor abrasions to the paper boards. Text and endpapers clean and unmarked throughout, free of foxing or damp. Elegant private library bookplates in each volume to front pastedown. Tarkington won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction twice, for Alice Adams and The Magnificent Ambersons, and a number of his works were adapted to the theatre and cinema. This set is not only signed by Booth Tarkington at the limitation (as called for) but also includes an additional suite of color plates at the frontispieces. Lavishly bound by Strikeman of New York in a full, light-brown, crushed levant morocco, the panels with triple-gilt fillet borders, framing lovely oval bands of gilt floral design. Intricate gilt-tooling and gilt-design within the compartments. Doublures of navy-blue crushed levant, top-edges gilt. Each octavo volume uniformly crisp and bright, the set easily meriting a Near Fine and bordering on truly Fine. AND MOST SIGNIFICANTLY OF ALL, TIPPED-IN AT VOL. I (JUST OPPOSITE THE COPYRIGHT PAGE) IS AN ORGINAL HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT PAGE FROM "THE GENTLEMAN FROM INDIANA". The page is clean and eminently legible and its inclusion makes this set "The Manuscript Edition" as well, the only one this bookseller has been able to locate.
