. Lives of the British Poets With Specimens of Their Writings. William P. Nimmo, Edinburgh, 1870.

Price: US$83.42 + shipping

Condition: Fair

Description: Green embossed leather with raised edges, raised frame with ornate scroll work on front and back cover, and 7 raised bands on spine and embossed clover leaves between each band. Gilt lettering on front and spine and gilt on page edges is in very good condition. Dark brown endpapers that have some small chips on edges at front, and the lfep is partially stuck to the inside back cover, with chips out of edge. There is handling wear on cover edges, corners, and spine ends. Half-inch by 1/4 inch piece out of back cover at top at spine. The back board is cupped and the textblock is very stiff. The pages are exceptionally clean and uncreased with no tears. The strange part is that each b&w engraving/illustration has light water staining around its edges which for some reason is not present on the text pages. The tissue in front of the title page is similarly stained but completely intact. Although there is no copyright date present, a presentation slip glued to the front endpaper states 1870. There is no odour to the book. The book was presented as first prize in French from the Bishop Strachan School to Emily and signed by a 'Lady Principal'. The slip itself is quite foxed. The poets covered include Shakespeare, Milton, Cowper, Pope, Byron, Wordsworth, Scott, Burns, Moore, Thomson, Beattie, and Goldsmith. Each poet has an illustration of his likeness and a short biography as well as samples of their work. A lovely, if worn, antique leather poetry book. None of my books are ex-library, remainders, or book club editions unless specified.
