Handsomely rebound in a uniform leather binding. The Imperial Edition. Originally bound in two volumes, this work has been rebound into five uniform volumes. Volumes I and III are bound with illustrated title page, and II and IV are bound with the standard title page. An additional biography of Shakespeare is bound in a separate volume, with two books in one. The biography, additional notes, and prefaces featured in this set are by Charles Knight the English publisher, editor and author. Born in 1791, Knight was the son of a bookseller and printer entered him into the world of publishing from an early age. After a time as a journalist, and after publishing several of his own works, he became the editor of 'The English Cyclopaedia' in 1853. Profusely illustrated throughout. Though two plates, (facing pages 401 and 457) have been rebound in as frontispieces to volume II and IV, and so do not correlate with content pages. Undated, dated using COPAC. Collated complete. An attractive and informative set, with intelligent observations by Knight throughout. Bound in a handsome uniform morocco binding. Externally very smart. The set largely uncut, fresh and generally very clean. A very nice set of the Knight's Imperial Shakespeare in the original parts, issued to subscribers only, housed in a sturdy cedar chest which has kept these volumes in almost pristine condition.
