Charles Dickens. THE LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT. Chapman & Hall, London, 1880.

Price: US$51.33 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: THE LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT. 2 Volumes. Charles Dickens. Illustrated by H K Browne (Phiz) Chapman & Hall, London 1880 (Circa) Vol One 504pp, Vol Two 508pp Illustrated Hardback. This two volume set is in FINE, bright and tight condition. There is some minimal dust darkening to the uncut top page edges. Dustwrappers are not called for. The Chapman and Hall Illustrated Library Edition was originally published in a de luxe embossed half leather binding and with many new illustrations especially commissioned for this edition. Dickens himself said in a dedication to Volume 1 of ‘The Pickwick Papers’ "This, the best edition of my books is, of right, inscribed to my dear friend John Foster, biographer of Oliver Goldsmith, in affectionate acknowledgement of his counsel, sympathy and faithful friendship during my whole literary life" This copy is from a subsequent popular edition circa 1880, bound in green linen covered bevel edged boards with embossed black decoration featuring the author and the publisher’s colophons with gilt titling to the front and the spine and blind stamping and borders to the back board. Charles John Huffam Dickens (7 February 1812 – 9 June 1870) was an English novelist, generally considered the greatest of the Victorian period. Dickens enjoyed a wider popularity and fame than had any previous author during his lifetime, and he remains popular, having been responsible for some of English literature's most iconic novels and characters. Many of his writings were originally published serially, in monthly installments or parts, a format of publication which Dickens himself helped popularize at that time. Unlike other authors who completed entire novels before serialization, Dickens often created the episodes as they were being serialized. The practice lent his stories a particular rhythm, punctuated by cliffhangers to keep the public looking forward to the next installment. The continuing popularity of his novels and short stories is such that they have never gone out of print In this, the bicentenary of Dickens’ birth, renewed interest in his life and works will be created with many new adaptations of his stories and documentaries on his life and work. Please note that the combined weight of these two volumes is over 2 Kilos so shipping rates will need to be quoted. Ref CDA
