Description: Thirty volumes in 60, edition de luxe limited to 1000 copies, this a slightly mixed set, with first two volumes number 482 and the rest numbered 14; large 8vo; facsimiles of original wrappers, vignette and engraved title pages illustrated by Cruikshank, plates throughout, four in the Christmas volumes hand colored; half burgundy morocco over marbled boards, gilt decorated spine in six compartments, gilt title in two; t.e.g.; spines and edges occasionally scuffed; upper free endpaper of vol. 1 loose, five plates loose and a couple others starting; small dent to lower board of vol. 15, closed tear to top edge of about 20 pages of vol. 47, very good overall.

Chapman & Hall, London. 1881-1882 limited Edition de Luxe, Dickens family copy with publisher's "Presentation Copy" bookplate inscribed to "Miss Hogarth"to front pastedown, etched and wood-engraved plates and illustrations after Phiz, Cruikshank etc. on india paper and mounted, with facsimile upper wrappers on blue paper bound in, original ink and wash drawing on paper titled "The Spirit of Xmas Present (1953)"loosely inserted, signed "Apologies to J. Leech. G.C. Dickens" to foot (a little chipped at fore-edge), vol. 1 with one plate loose at end, some light browning to margins and peripheral ff., original pale green cloth, paper spine labels browned and several with loss or lacking, spines lightly toned and with a few nicks to ends, lightly soiled, extremities lightly rubbed, slight shelf-lean, uncut, 4to. A posthumous set of the Works presented by the publisher to Georgina Hogarth (1827-1917) devoted sister-in-law and housekeeper to Dickens. Georgina moved in with her sister Catherine and brother-in-law aged 15, famously staying with Dickens after his separation from Catherine in 1858. She remained with the family until Dickens' death in 1870, described in his will as the "best and truest friend man ever had". The loosely inserted original drawing is by Dickens' grandson Admiral Sir Gerald Charles Dickens, son of Sir Henry Fielding Dickens

Description: In 1881 Chapman and Hall produced a set of the Works of Charles Dickens, limited to 1000 copies. Generally it was 30 volumes but a few were "30 volumes bound as 60." This set has 60 volumes and is number 34 of 1000.The set contains extra illustrations and four hand colored illustrations in the Christmas volume.Three quarter leather on marbleized boards. Spines are hubbed and contain gilt floral decoration as well as author/title in gilt. Uncut fore edge. The condition is marvelous. Minor shelf wear on some bottom edges and a bit of spine wear. Numbered 647 of 1000. Many illustrations in each volume, from a variety of artists including Phiz, Cruikshank, and others. Also includes 4 hand colored illustrations in sec. 1 of the Christmas Books set. Very good, with slight fading to spines and most volumes having scuffing to leather at spines. Pages at front and rear of each volume a bit browned. Sec. 1 of the Christmas books has a bit of dampstain at heel. An attractive collection of Dickens in sturdy, nicely illustrated, and easily read volumes.
